Theres no money in ev repairs unless it's a small repair. Reason being is with rebuild status insurance might not wanna give even half incase of another accident. Try high-end super Cars rebuilds.

No you could still be Tesla used parts dealer. Or sell parts for ev conversions to ev vehicle builders. Best thing to do is find 4 vehicles you like to stream line for conversions and shop for them cheap once the motors blown or minor front end damage write offs.

Not that VW Beetles haven't been done a million times, but I would think it'd be easier to get one of the millions of little British cars, like Spitfires, MGs, Austins, etc.... that have a ton of room under the hood, manual brakes and steering, and can be had in good shape for just a few thousand dollars. Same as the Beetle, it's about 63hp factory, so nearly anything is going to be a step up.

  • Richter12x2

I like EVs for classics, because after living with classic cars for years, I get tired of going out on a nice day to go for a drive in it, finding out I have to rebuild the fuel systems and carbs AGAIN, after 150 miles, because they aren't meant to sit and aren't compatible with new gas. Then after rebuilding everything for the tenth time, the 327 engine gets 5 mpg and produces a whopping 165hp. I want classic car style that just works.

A lot have changed in the last year. Today a fully working EV such as the Kangoo Z.E. or ZOE can be bought for $5000-10000. And they contain almost every single component needed for the conversation. It would be a bit limited both in regard to power and range of course. And from a value perspective it makes no sense. But as a rewarding hobby project it's at least financially feasible for a lot more people.

Only remote lock and radio. The idea was making the probe the daily summer driver instead of the V8 truck that cost $50 every fill up.

This equation changes a lot if you know what you're doing. And I mean KNOW what you're doing. Building your own batteries from 21700 cells sourced from China. Sourcing your motor from China. Using a rolling chassis you pulled out of a junk yard for $500 dollars. Designing your own motor and battery cooling systems. Those raw costs come down a lot. Now that 20k battery is 7k. The 10k motor is 2k. The chassis cost is 500-1500 + cost to restore (variable depending on your skills/access to a paint shop).

Why would one convert an Audi RS into electric? That Audi is no match for a Tesla Model S P100D, nor does the Audi or any german car look more exciting than the Tesla. Let alone, the entire Audi electric build will be a mess with no backseat and all other problems. Dressing up a Tesla with a nice bodykit and custom wheels would do the trick I would guess, if one would like to go electric and sporty as a daily driver.

My car is faster and runs three times longer on a single charge. It cost a little more than 30 thousand to build but it is a one hundred persent custom made car. Oh and on the track it runs the quarter mile in 8.34 seconds. Never go with standard manufacturing for conversion. They are over priced.

For those who really want a green way of powering their electric cars, they will have to consider solar panels, wind turbine or other ways in which non fossil fuels are not used to produce the electricity you use to charge your electric cars. Some provinces like Manitoba receive the most annual sunshine and anyone in Manitoba would have the advantage if solar panels are used.

Great video! I have been looking into EV conversion for years now. I own a 1985 Mercedes Model 126C 500SEC that I brought here from Germany back in the days when I moved to the states. I have been contemplating what to do with it. I can´t sell it because I brought it here under special NATO military rules and the vehicle has no US title. I would have to scrap it or ship it back to Germany. I keep it registered, but don´t really drive it. V8 5L gas hog! Still runs great though! I would love to convert it to EV. If I tackle a conversion, I would like to get rid of the transmission and install direct-drive electric AC motors on the rear axle. But there is nothing on the market yet, which would be a viable and easy option, as far as I know. I don´t need max speed or max acceleration. Just some easy 200+ miles of electric cruising. Right now I drive a Chevy VOLT and put in a pre-order for a Tesla Truck. I want to go full electric on everything - HA! Rich - again - very informative video. Keep on!

Nice to get actual numbers on this sort of thing. Clearly someone is going to have to start making body conversion kits for EVs so they can be exotically beautiful like a GT, Esprit, or (gasp!) a Vector. I know you can buy a Fiero with a V6 that wears a Countach body for around $60k out the door. Can't some patron saint of the Italian wedge make a kit to turn my Leaf or a used Model S into a gold-digger magnet?

This is a great video, especially given that the poster is waist deep in this industry, and really only profits from people willing to take the plunge and staying positive. That being said, this stuff is gradually coming within reach and getting less expensive by the day as used parts, know-how, and 2nd tier vendors enter the market. Unfortunately, the cars most likely to be the best platforms to learn on, like that VW are slowly disappearing at the same time.

As a classicist I weep for all those classic cars being cannibalized and used for EV conversions. As an engineer, I think that there are better alternatives than electric motors. As a gearhead and a passionate car maniac, I just think that most of them were already rusting out badly, so it was either EV conversion or a scrap heap. I just hope people that do this keep the performance of the modified car close to the old one: for example, putting a 300 HP engine in a FIAT 500 from 1957 can go all sorts of wrong when driving :)

Anyone who want to swap their engine to an EV are dumbasses! Especially if their doing it to be green... ALL aspects of the EV's are made, shipped, etc. using fossil fuels SO EV's are actually WORSE on the environment. If your doing it for performance the swap on.
