Cheap plastic or metal canopy over the wall mount charging point, almost = IP65.
Every time Rich says "ashy", Bill Burr springs to mind...
this isn't a work around, but in Canada, our charge cables come with a metal ring that is clamped around the cable. It's basically a strain relief ring. You can use vice grips to clamp the ring.... it leaves a tab that can't be pulled through the hole. I can say it never comes out because I've replaced my wall connector cable 3 times..... my car has slipped down our driver way twice, pulling the want apart both times. Never damaged the port on the Model S and certainly didn't pull the cable out of the Wall Connector assembly. Just a suggestion - Great Channel, BTW
Use the goddamn better cable glans. Industrial one is good this kind of IP - rate. Sun and cold weater is not good for plastic.
Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
charger is cool
Take some electrical tape and rap it round at the end of the armor sheath and make a cone ( wide bit at the top ) this should stop it being pulled through. The other method would to put an large cable tie near the end the 2 or layers of head shrink tape to make a ridge that can't be pulled through. The last option would be to buy a second wall mounted cable clamp and mount that on the wall below to take the brunt of the strain
It hrat the new chager
Good video and good delivery with personality
Nice...
What's Richard's day job ?
How about an electric Aston Martin! Style in it's most beautiful form and as an e-drive .... killer
Get a strain relief grip sized od of the cable, put an eye nut on the wall to support the basket
Rich on all of my corded tools i install a clamp on the tools body using an existing fastener. because this pull out stress all ways occurs
Did the gen 3 wall charger fix the problem?
WatzzZilla looks good, a great solution 👍
That tesla thing was designed not by an engineer, theres way too much leverages and forces being applied to that flimsy plastic structure, also the clamp on the new charger is a short circuit hazard, the clamp should have teeth that pinch the cord instead of claws that tear into it...
Coiled cable is a big problem. It is actually always "not extended". You'll get it when you use it.
Hey Rich, Noticed you still haven't put the cable in conduit! Greetings from Australia
You should buy a water hose holder!!!
Damn your kids and the shaving, you are brave bro!!! Lol
Rich. Thanks for the good Tesla information. I’m looking at purchasing a used 2015 Model S P85D from a used car dealer. I love this particular Model S of course for the 691hp. No accidents. 86k miles. Who wouldn’t? It’s seems to be in great condition. What should my concerns be?
Nice video and repair. The NEMA charger is impressive but the price tag is way too much, I do not have a garage at home so when I purchase a Tesla the charger and the car will be outside, I will probably just put a little roof ove the charger to minimize wheater dammage.
Tesla shoddy workmanship on the wire bracket and rubber insolation is disgustingly cheaply done. I loved wattzilla, I be telling my friend about them.
To power two chargers at the same time, I think you might need 400 amp service, 200 amps would not be enough.
The loop is not the solution. Try fixing the cable to the wall with a seperate clamp... That would solve most of the issues i the future. :)
asmar
I think that by adding a strap to hold the wire will help with shifting the wires inside and add a hook next to the box will do the trick
Could you fit the charger horizontally so there is less pull on charging wire.
Hey bro let me just smell ur head real quick
The Wattzilla 80amp cost was ...$1800, of course it is way better than tesla's one
How are you getting 80A charging? The current wall connector states it uses a 60A circuit and only delivers 48A max?

I would expect from TESLA they have better industrial designers to create a box like this .Why to complex !
Of course, before working on your charger, pull the breaker or fuse that’s providing power to the charger. Don’t want a “How I got electrocuted fixing my charger” video.
Need more people to develop stuff like this as don't mind paying for good quality products instead of the expensive cheap plastic use a few times junk
Tie a lose knot before the clamp to prevent that.
A small point, the wall unit is not a charger. The actual charger is built into the car. The wall unit is a 500 dollar box for delivering household mains to the car.
Yep mine is outside as well in central nj has already dealt with monsoons blizzards and winds and works like a champ
you can maybe tape big grit sanding paper to the clamp wall making contact with the cable, diy teeth
Lol this is what you always expect when opening a broken electrical device "must be some wire that is broken ahaa these two wires should be connected yeah okay fixed it"
I just got a Model X and wanted to save money by relying almost exclusively on superchargers with basic 110v charging at home. This is to take full advantage of the lifetime unlimited supercharging. There are three superchargers directly on the 50 mile route from my home to office. How realistic is it for me to just supercharge 10 minutes a day + slow charge at home 12hrs a day for just commuting? I don't want to deal with maintaining supercharging at home or pay for the hardware.
Not a good idea due to constant moisture accumulation due to weather. They should redo the elec design . Lol it's always vthe simple stuff that goes wrong. To fix that would cost $2 in parts for them. But still he made it work
really? was the cable gland really too expensive? even their new version is worse than 360 degrees support that simple gland can provide...
sweet new charger as looks durable and robust
you got it it’s blank
hey you forgot your best friend kitchen knife
This guy really hates Tesla huh?
Hmmmmm, still no conduit inside?
Just go down 3 feet under box and put an updated clamp into the concrete. Problem solved no need to buy another
Oh My Little Pony!
The WattZilla charger looks nice.. for $3500 it better be.
Wrap it in electrical tape and then grip tape like use on a hockey stick you can cut to size and length you need and if it never dries out and you need to replace it that electrical tape is a buffer between it's adhesive and the cable clamp it down and that's all I got for an idea for quick fix
You should buy the new electric mustang
Excellent video...thanks! I just installed my Tesla wall charger but didn't use the adapter so mine sits closer to the wall. I used two gauge cable and yes it was a real pain getting the wires into the slots (very little maneuvering room). Like you, I went with a 100 amp breaker. If I was to do it again, I think I would set my sites lower and use smaller cable/breaker.
Cable stress relief with Polyurethane. $20 bucks.
Happy thought about installing a camera over that box just in case somebody tries to like cut it
I just wanted to let you know that I love watching everyone of your videos. I don't yet on an EV but someday I will, I currently drive a Honda Insight hybrid and I'd like to get a used Tesla someday. Until then I'll continue to watch and download your videos and continue my EV education.
Know i'm late to the party but my 1st thought was "who drove off with it still plugged in?" lol....look when he puts the cable back in the clamp how much the outer shield is compressed on the wire and how much uncompressed shield is above the clamp, there is just no way that cable should have just "slipped out" lol
thing can charge a TANK like to of em in an hr lmao geez
Bruh just put something in with the clamp for better grip. I'm sure you could come up with something. Heck even hot glue should work.
A small bump out installed over the charging unit to shed the rain could be built in a day. Could even make an enclosure. A garden hose hook "half moon" installed just over the unit could easily handle that cable and relieve the stress. But if you hate your money, then that new overbuilt charger is fine I guess. I expect to see something like that at a commercial site, not a home.
Jesus, how do you manage to break everything Tesla-related?
You could secure the line to the wall with a clamp...Because you are still going to pull on that cable...Ashe hands and all...lol
Exxon mobile pulled the cord out
I wonder how much efficient the wattzilla is with the coil design of the cable. With it running 80A DC it’s effectively strong solenoid generating two magnetic fields that cancel each other out.
can we get an f for the cover being broke
I use dollar shave and it is smooth buying. I could give you more details. Hit me up.
Using coiled cables as you will discover is a royal PITA. They tell you it's 25 feet long but the coils wind up reducing the length to more like 20-22 feet. Utilizing straight cables like Tesla does is the better way. Another point is due to the coils more force is applied to reach the vehicle your trying to charge. Best of luck.
lol - awesome recap
Was that 100amp breaker for the whole house or just the wall charger?
Put another clamp under your charger secured to the concrete about 12 inches away to reduce “pull” on the cable
New charger looks a whole hell of a lot higher quality than either Tesla charger.
The weight of the cable breaks the charger? Ugh...
Rich, I live in Suffolk County and I looking to order my model 3 before the final credit goes away, but I would like to meet with you before I place my order. I want to use your referral code. I will be using the car to do Uber and Lyft and I am concern I would not be permitted to use the supercharges so I need your help. Can you please call me at (917) 335-5049 so I can ask you some questions.
This idea should interrest Tesla themself. especially when the tesla Semi will be fully electric and start to come on the commercial branch. ( i know it will come one day) . this Commecial charger is the way that should be design for everyone.
the message i am getting is that Tesla products are sub standard, thanks for the vids better than that sam bloke
may i recommend super glue.
That dual charger is awesome, but man...$3500. 80A is way more than I need (unless that's breaker not output rating. 60A breaker/48A max for the X, and 40/32A max for the Bolt EV. So the infra for the 80A is overkill for me. would love a dual cord one though
Ive been jumping around your videos, and so far ive liked what ive seen, so now you have a new subscriber 😎👍🏻
80 AMPS.... WTF?!!!!
Still no conduit. ;) Wattzilla looks like an American built NEMA electrical box.
Love the new charger. What a beast!
But I'm only white...choclate.
Take ideas from column A and a little from column B to beef up the cute Tesla charger. Looping the cable coming from the bottom and securing to the wall or a stake could mitigate the tug stress.
You do all this just to drive a Tesla which really ain’t all that cool..smh...but regardless I do enjoy your videos building and problem solving 🤙🏿
Not sure if it's safe but they should have a box u can install around the charger for extra water protection kinda like what they install around some camera in some area so people dont break them
I'm not much of a EV person, But it definitely does intrigue me tho, I'm kinda excited to see how this turns out, Good job so far ( Except for those welds 😂😂😂 ) Keep up the good work man
I have been watching your videos and “ALL Your Problems” with a Tesla and ure telling me you have to buy their charger too!!no Thanks I’ll stick to my 2014 Prius, less hassles!!
its not a design flaw you need to put a wire strap on that cable below the box ...The NFPA electric code requires it and it would've kept that from happening.
You should've crimped a terminal connector on the small wire you reinstalled , not busting on you . It just creates a better more solid connection for the screw to bite onto
Sorry Rich I laughed so hard @ the NICE + Exaggerated sound of the cover breaking...
yeah lets just drop 3500 on a new charger for the sake of it fuck me, if only the rest of the real world had your money...
I thought spending $50k and up for an electric vehicle would then solve my problems about conventional gas vehicle but this just create more and more problems! I guess I should just buy a Honda, no headache for me later on!
If you still had the original charger installed, a strip of bicycle inner tube clamped between the clamp and the wire adds a nice extra bit of resistance to cable-pulling. Discovered when fixing the power cord on a cheap electric drill that kept pulling its lead out of the trigger. Also hot glued it, for added security. Haven't had an issue since. You could also add a hook for the wires - like those ones designed for garden hoses to coil over. Cheap but effective.
Oops.
Oops.
Oops.
Why am I Even watching this.I don’t own a Tesla,I don’t have a charger,Im 13,I should do my homework right now brb
Why not just grab a wireless charger? The tech is easy to make, you could actually make it from a microwave oven
